W. R. Strong was a big name in Sacramento prior to the turn of last century. For over forty years he was a commission merchant and wholesale dealer in seeds, fruit, honey, and produce. In the Sacramento City Directory for 1857 he was identified as a seed dealer, but when the 1901 edition saw print there was no business listing for Mr. Strong, just a residence. This beautifully engraved receipt from August 9, 1889 is highlighted by an illustration of a train loading fruit alongside an orchard.
