Starting in 1850, the steamboat "Antelope" was one of sixteen such vehicles plying their trade up and down the Sacramento River for a handful of companies. Running for the California Steam Navigation Co., the "Antelope" carried the mail as well as passengers and freight. The receipt illustrated is from November 4, 1858 and features the steamer under a full layer of smoke; the freight three cases of....? for $1. On left of billhead is illustration of ship.
