This is a facsimile of the original survey map by Captain W.H. Warner in December 1848; extended and surveyed by Clement W. Coote, Dec. 1849. Copied by H. Ehrenberg, surveyor. It was reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress. John Sutter Jr. commissioned this survey of the Embarcadero and Sutter's other lands for a new Sacramento City. His father, John Sutter, had plans for establishing the city at Sutterville, on higher ground. But with the founding of Sacramento backed by Sam Brannan and Sutter Jr., Sutterville was destined never to become the city of Sutter's dreams. Note the grid pattern used for the streets which is still in effect today. This is number 56 of an edition limited to 500 copies.
