Interior view of Steel Foundry at Southern Pacific Railroad Sacramento Shops complex showing men filling steel ingot moulds. At the time the Steel Foundry was built at the turn of the century it housed the largest electric furnace west of Chicago. During the 1920s, some 30 tons of steel a month went into castings, generally running gear components, that required extra strength. The rest went to the Rolling Mill to make high strength fasteners. The Steel Foundry became uneconomical to operate during the 1930s and shut down.
