Interior view of Brass Foundry. This image may date soon after the 1921 completion of the new Brass Foundry. Man at right is machining car brass. Furnaces are along back wall. Brass originally had many decorative and practical functions on locomotives and cars. Later, it was used principally for bearings in cars, until superseded by roller bearings. Alloys had to be melted, cast and then machined in this shop.
