Hailed as "one of the most modern stations on the Pacific Coast and one of the finest structures in Sacramento" in 1926 by RAILWAY AGE magazine, the Southern Pacific depot looks imposing, tidy, and very solid in this black and white postcard printed shortly after the opening. Though still in use, the depot and building adjacent face an uncertain fate, the victims of changing times and years of neglect. Supporters argue that the location close by downtown and Old Sacramento is perfect and the buildings repairable, while critics claim the seventy-five year old structures have served their purpose and should make way for the new.
