The shipment of live chickens in special hen house cars was once commonplace in America between 1890 and 1950. One such company to bring live domestic fowl to market was the Palace Poultry Car Company organized in 1924. Poultry car had wire mesh sides with the interior divided into a multi-level series of inidividual coops, each fitted with feed and water troughs. Some cars could hold over 4,000 birds and also a carman who fed his traveling companions en route.
