This receipt with fancy logo in grape-colored ink from Kohler and Van Bergen shows what $22.50 could buy in 1890. The liquor business seemed a sure bet in pre-Prohibition Sacramento--there were more saloons than restaurants and the Valley always had a thirst. Henry Kohler and Edward Van Bergen's wine and brandy business was one of several that found their way into the 1891 Sacramento City Directory, but by 1898 their listing had disappeared without a vapor.
