Business begat business in Sacramento, and many of the business leaders of the 20th century spent time with established concerns learning their trade. William Henderson was a bookkeeper with Wood-Curtis, wholesale fruit and produce dealers, in 1891 and had earlier teamed up with H. P. Markert selling groceries, hay, and grain. As far back as 1873 Thomas Longton was a dealer in vegetables and later president of the Longton Produce Co., but he also worked for Wood-Curtis at the turn of the century. Henderson and Longton combined forces and were among the city's leading produce dealers into the 1920's.
