Interior view of Boiler Shop looking north. Boilers and truss work are on a dirt floor. At the Boiler Shop, boilers, tanks, and even smokestacks were manufactured and repaired by shearing, rolling, flanging and riveting thick metal plate. Steamboat boilers, generally larger than those on locomotives, also were routinely manufactured. In the early days most machines were hand-operated. Pneumatic and hydraulic power later took over many of the tasks.
